The Kalulushi Magistrates’ court has sentenced a Clerical officer at the National Registration Office to 10 months simple imprisonment for corrupt practices involving KR100.

Kalulushi Magistrate Eusebio Kaoma convicted Virginia Maliano found guilty for corrupt practices by public officer contrary to section 29(1) as read with section 41 of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Act Chapter 91 of the Laws of Zambia on June 4, 2013.

ACC Public Relations Manager Timothy Moono confirmed the development in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

Details of the offence are that between 1st and 31st July 2010, Maliano being a public officer with the National Registration Office corruptly solicited for KR100 and actually received KR80 cash gratification from Sichilongo Mengo and Kasapo Chilambwe as an inducement or reward for facilitating the issuance of replacement of NRCs for the said persons.

This is a matter that concerned the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Mr Moono disclosed that Maliano was arrested after a tip-off which led ACC officers to the crime scene.

The ACC Public relations Officer has since appealed to all public officers to uphold integrity in the discharge of their duties and desist from corrupt practices.
