THE Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola has remained without power five days after Zesco disconnected the facility for failure to settle the outstanding K285,000 electricity bill.
As a result, the stadium management is facing serious challenges in terms of security and watering the pitch.
Zesco has demanded that the stadium management pays half of the bill and provide a viable payment plan before power could be restored.
Stadium director Mwifwa Ng’ambi said in an interview that the situation at the sports ground remained the same and that management was waiting for debtors to pay the outstanding dues.
Asked how they were managing events, cleaning and security without electricity, Ng’ambi put on a brave face saying they appreciated the situation in which they were and were doing everything possible although it was difficult.
“We have presented our problem to the Ministry of Sports permanent secretary so that they help us recover some money the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) owes us. Fingers crossed, we hope something tangible comes up and really quickly,” Ng’ambi said.
Stadium management in excess of K1.2 million that stretches as far back as 2013 in unpaid user fees when the facility staged the Equatorial Guinea 2015 Africa Cup of Nations and the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
