POLICE in Kasama have arrested two men of Mulila village for allegedly raping and murdering a 39-year-old woman.
And three people have died in separate road traffic accidents in Luapula Province.
Northern Province acting commissioner of police Lackson Sakala said in an interview yesterday that the incident happened on Saturday around 10:00 hours at Mulila village.
Mr Sakala named the suspects as Caiaphas Chishimba, 25, and Amos Chisanga, 38, while the deceased has been identified as Elizabeth Kambole, also of Mulila village.
“What happened was that the deceased had gone to her field where the two suspects allegedly followed and raped her before strangling her to death. The body is in Kasama General Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem,” Mr Sakala said.
The matter was reported to the police by Ms Kambole’s neighbour, Mary Mulenga, 43, after she found the body in the field.
And police in Kasama are looking for three people who include a woman for allegedly stabbing a 27-year-old taxi driver to death after they hired his vehicle.
Mr Sakala said Steven Mulenga was stabbed in the stomach and that the incident happened yesterday around 02:00 hours.
Police are yet to make arrests.
And NANCY SIAME reports that three people on Saturday died in separate accidents in Luapula.
Luapula Province deputy commissioner of police Webby Shula said the accidents happened on Saturday in Kawambwa, Chembe and Samfya districts.
Mr Shula said in an interview yesterday that the accident in Kawambwa happened at 09:30 hours at Chisembe Hills in Chief Mushota’s area.
He said the accident involved a Hino tipper truck registration number ADC 5035, which was being driven by Dickson Kalobwe, 42, of Kota village in Chief Mushota’s area.
“The vehicle was being driven along Luwingu-Kawambwa road and when Mr Kalobwe reached the said place about 89 kilometres away from Kawambwa, he lost control of the vehicle after the brakes failed, making it overturn once,” Mr Shula said.
Mr Kalobwe died on the spot. The body is in Kawambwa District Hospital mortuary.
The second accident happen at 13:30 hours at Matanda Junction on Chembe-Mansa road.
Mr Shula said the accident involved Kelvin Chimbalanga, 30, of Kalasa village in Mansa, who was knocked down by a bus.
“The victim was being chased by a known person and as he tried to cross the road, he was run over by the bus,” he said.
Mr Shula said the bus, registration number ACT 6999, was being driven by Joel Shumba, 49, of Kitwe.
“The pedestrian died on the spot due to the impact,” Mr Shula said.
He said the third accident which was a hit-and-run happened around 21:30 hours on Tuta Road.
The deceased has been identified as Lawrence Mushili, 45, of Chief Kalasamukoso’s area.
