HANDBALL Association of Zambia (HAZ) officials are flirting with a ban from the Confederation of African Handball (CAHB) for missing two technical meetings prior to the 2015 All Africa Games (AAG).
According to CAHB regulations, technical meetings that are held in the build-up to every continental championship are mandatory to all affiliates and failure to attend without giving concrete reason attracts suspension for a considerable period of time.
CAHB first vice-president Lanre Glover has since notified HAZ of the imminent suspension from the continental handball governing body.
HAZ general secretary Josab Changa confirmed in an interview yesterday that his association had since been notified of the impending punishment.
Changa said the missing on the CAHB meetings was because HAZ officials were left out of Zambia’s travelling contingent by the Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ).
“We are fully aware of the consequences and it’s not that we missed out on the meetings deliberately, we were not part of the travelling delegation and there was nothing that we could have done about that.
Therefore, we just hope they will not be too harsh on us,” Changa said.
Meanwhile, Changa said the association was happy with the performance of the handball team despite suffering elimination without a single victory.
He said the team displayed a brave fight especially that they were making a maiden appearance at the pan-African Games where competition was stiff.
“We are proud of our team’s performance despite them not winning any match. They faced big teams and the competition was very tough, but they have drawn positives from competing at that stage,” Changa said.
He said the association would now concentrate on the men’s team that would be competing in the Egypt 2016 Africa Championship in January.
