Eastern Water and Sewerage Company (EWSCO) is owed K6 million in unpaid bills by government and private institutions in Eastern Province.
EWSCO managing director Lytone Kanowa disclosed during a consultative meeting with Chipata residents and other stakeholders that this has negatively impacted on the company’s revenue.
Mr Kanowa stated that EWSCO is not able to meet its production cost saying Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo is aware and has advised EWSCO to disconnect all departments that owe the company
in outstanding bills.
He also said that his company is only able to raise K1.650 million from billings saying its production cost currently stands at K3million.
The Managing Director stated that EWSCO is in need of K1.2 million to meet its operational and maintenance costs.
He stated that the company hopes to get help from the National Urban Water Supply to replace dilapidated infrastructure and improve service delivery among residents in the province.
Mr Kanowa also disclosed that infrastructure at its Lutembwe dam one has been encroached by land developers.
He stated that though the company does not have title deed, it has engaged Chipata Municipal to resolve the matter and ensure that adequate land is reserved for the company’s infrastructure.
