—Director of Zambia Disability, HIV/AIDS and Human Rights (ZDAHR), Elijah Ngwale, has called on government through the Ministry of Home Affairs, to intervene in the situation where 485 prisoners at Milima prison take one meal per day due to broken down kitchen equipment.
Mr Ngwale has noted that the right to eat is every person’s basic human right and as such it does not need to be violated.
He told ZANIS in a telephone interview in Lusaka today that if the prisoners are having one meal per day, it means they are serving two sentences at a goal.
He explained that the first sentence they are serving is that of starvation and the second one is the one they were convicted for.
Mr Ngwale has appealed to government to intervene before lives are lost due to starvation at the prison.
He also noted that some prisoners have mental disorder and cannot do without food while some are on ARVs, hence the need for something to be done by government urgently.
About 485 prisoners at Milima prison in Kasama in Northern Province take one meal per day.
Milima Prisons Officer in charge, David Phiri, attributed this situation to the broken down kitchen equipment.
Mr Phiri said since the kitchen equipment broke down last year, preparation of meals for inmates has been difficult, forcing authorities to provide them with a meal in a day.
