Kalusha Bwalya has given his full backing to under-fire goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene after missing a penalty in last Saturday’s 2017 Africa Cup home qualifier against Guinea Bissau.
Mweene squandered last minute spot-kick that was saved by Jonas Mendes to deny Zambia the three points against Guinea Bissau to see their Group E qualifier end scoreless in Ndola.
The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeepers’ decision to step up to the spot was the highlight of an otherwise quiet day for him in a match that he was not troubled by Guinea Bissau.
His miss came a fortnight after his blunder from a back-pass in the 2015 Cosafa Cup Plate final handed Malawi a 1-0 win.
“It can happen to anybody, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, they have all missed penalties, for the better part of the match Mweene was a passenger today,” Kalusha said.
“So it can happen to anybody, I sat down and I also encouraged him to go on because in this life if you don’t miss a penalty you don’t know what it means.
“He has scored important goals for Zambia and I think even the next time when we have one, Kennedy Mweene is number one choice to take the penalty we have every confidence in him.”
