THE Zambia Bureau of Standard (ZABS) has destroyed assorted counterfeit products and second-hand underwear worth about K245,000.
ZABS head of marketing and public relations Hazel Zulu said the bureau confiscated about 70,000 metres of sub-standard electric cables and 632 dozens of counterfeit black shoe polish in September last year.
Ms Zulu said at a press briefing at Lusaka’s Chunga dump site yesterday that the incinerated failed electric cables, second-hand underwear and counterfeit shoe polish were confiscated from various suppliers in the central business area of Lusaka.
“The bureau confiscated over 90 bales of used underwear and the products to be incinerated have a net value of approximately K245,000.00,” she said.
Ms Zulu said the bureau will not relent in its mandate of ensuring that the goods being off loaded on the market are safe.
She said sub-standard goods are a health and safety risk as well as a danger to the environment and as such should not be allowed anywhere near the public.
Ms Zulu said the bureau intends to spread out across the country to create awareness and compliance so that sub-standard products are completely removed from the market.
