CATHERINE Phiri says she is ready to face interim World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight champion Jessica Gonzalez in March.
The Zambian boxing heroine, who is a bantamweight silver champion, was initially supposed to trade punches with Caroline Rodriges but the WBC replaced the Chilean with Gonzalez.
But Catherine said the change of an opponent will not affect her preparations because her aim is to win the title and that fighting a champion was motivation enough to grab the belt to edge closer to challenging for the main title.
Catherine said in an interview that she was ready to fight Gonzalez anywhere in the World because her aim to boost her chances of challenging for the main WBC bantamweight title held by Yasmine Rivas.
She said she will focus on her training despite the fact that the two stables are yet to agree on terms of the contract.
“I am preparing adequately for this fight especially that I will be fighting a WBC interim champion. I am informed that she is a very good boxer but I will not be intimidated by that because I also want to become the champion and win the proper belt,” she said.
Meanwhile, Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) manager Chris Malunga said his stable was still waiting for feedback from WBC after failing to agree on certain logistics with Gonzalez promoters.
Malunga said the deadline of signing the contract is January 31st and they will wait for the response from WBC before they sign.
OQBP last week wrote to WBC to help them resolve the standoff after Gonzalez camp offered less purse money and two air tickets for the Catherine camp, a decision that irked Malunga.
