Kambwili hails Esther

MINISTER of Youth and Sport Chishimba Kambwili has congratulated former boxing World champion Esther Phiri for being recognised by Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.
Phiri at the weekend received a recognition award in Bulawayo for her contribution to sport in the region.
Kambwili said it is encouraging to see Phiri, who made female boxing famous, being recognised outside her country of origin.

“It was amazing to see our very own Esther Phiri being recognised in Zimbabwe. She proved to be the best female boxer not only in the region but the continent. Congratulations to her,” he said.
Kambwili wished Phiri the best of luck as she returns to the ring next weekend.
Phiri, who hung up her gloves three years ago, has made a comeback and is scheduled to fight Uruguayan Jennifer Foccie in a non-title fight at Lusaka’s Chez Ntemba VIP.

“Esther is not the only person who has come back from retirement. We have seen a lot of boxers like Evander Holyfield, who hung up his gloves but still came back to fight. We can only wish Esther the best luck. We are proud of her,” he said.

Kambwili said it will be interesting to see Phiri fight again after a long time.
Phiri’s comeback fight has been postponed twice before but her promoters Exodus Boxing Promotions are on course raising funds to host the fight.
A total of K200,000 from the actual K390, 000 budget has been raised.
