ZAMBIA’S top golfer Madalitso Muthiya has welcomed the challenge of winning the 2013 Zambia Sugar Zambia open golf tournament to be held in May at the Lusaka golf club.
In an interview Muthiya said the challenge had always been there and would work hard to overcome it.
Zambia Open golf tournament chairman Robert Chomba challenged local golfers to win this year’s tournament and not allow foreigners to beat them.
“The challenge has always been there. Actually that has always been my aim to win the Zambia Open. So even this year I will go with the same vision of winning it,” Muthiya said.
He said he expected all the Zambian golfers to rise to the occasion and aim to win the tournament instead of being mere spectators.
He said he was aware of what the fans were expecting and would work hard to ensure he finished the tournament on a reasonable position.
He however said he would play in the tournament without pressure despite a lot of expectations from the fans and the organizing committee.
“I don’t make promises when I’m playing in any tournament. All I can tell the Zambian people is that I will work and try my best to win the tournament,” he said.
South Africans have dominated winning the Zambia Golf Open and no Zambian has ever won the tournament that is held yearly in the country.
This year’s tournament has attracted 158 professionals with South Africa having a larger share of them at 120.
Zambia will field 15 professionals among them Muthiya, Michael Chiluba and female golfer Melissa Nawa.
