—Government has awarded over 300 freedom fighters, former Cabinet Ministers and senior service chiefs for their contribution to the development of the nation since independence.
This was during the investiture ceremony held ahead of Zambia’s Golden Jubilee which will be celebrated tomorrow to mark 50 years of independence.
The ceremony was held at Mika Hotel in Chongwe today to honour gallant men and women who contributed positively during and after the independence struggle.
Lusaka Province Minister, Phillip Kosamu, awarded various chiefs, among them Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamambo II of the Soli people of Lusaka province and Chief Nshindi of the Lunda people.
Mr Kosamu also awarded former Permanent Secretaries, former Chief Executive Officers, Ambassadors and High Commissioners and the media.
Others who were awarded are sportsmen and women, among them Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president, Kalusha Bwalya and former national soccer team coach, Herve Renard.
On the side-lines of the event, Senior Chief Nshindi of the Lunda people said there is need for government and the Zambian people to reflect on the achievements and failures 50 years after independence.
Chief Nshindi added that there is need for government to address high poverty levels and disease burden in the country.
Meanwhile, Chief Munyumbwe of Gwembe district in Southern Province said there is need for government to consult grass root levels when making developmental decisions.
And former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, who also served in various diplomatic positions, Ambassador Simata Akapelwa, called for the need to consult technocrats on issues of development.
And former national soccer team head coach, Herve Renard, told ZANIS in an interview that he is honoured to receive an award for his contribution towards Zambia’s sports development.
Renard further urged Zambians to continue preserving peace and unity which the country has enjoyed for the past 50 years.
And Renard’s former assistant coach, Patrice Beaumelle, said there is need for Zambia to improve sports infrastructure for the country to record significant strides in the sector.
