Zambia captain and Bidvest Wits striker, Christopher Katongo, has been axed by Chipolopolo coach Honour Janza.
The 2012 Africa Cup winning captain was released from the teams’ Ndola camp on Monday just 24 hours after Zambia returned from their 2015 Africa Cup Group F qualifier away in Niger.
Team manager Lusekelo Kamwambi told the Siya crew that Katongo has been released from the camp ahead of their encounter against Niger on Wednesday at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
“Coach Janza, in a bold move aimed at boosting team spirit and unity in Chipolopolo, has released captain Christopher Katongo from camp. The decision was not based on disciplinary grounds but purely tactical reasons. Janza intends to make drastic changes to the squad to face Niger on Wednesday therefore he wishes to spare the blushes of the captain that might arise from the possible omission from the team,” Kamwambi said.
Katongo has been a bit player in Janza’s last two games, after starting from the bench in the 2-1 loss to Cape Verde on September 10 and 0-0 draw on October 11 in Niamey against Niger.
He came on in the 78th minute against Niger for midfielder, Chisamba Lungu.
Defender Stopilla Sunzu or Nathan Sinkala will captain the team in the absence of Katongo, who has been with the national team for ten years.
Janza knows the players but he don’t know how to use them, and tomorrow surprise me with a win other wise I can’t watch soccer for now I may collapse if u lose
wat goes up must come down.
Janza is a share waste of time and money, Kalusha Bwalya is jst a cheap fool, he should resign and give chance to serious pipo. Bena kalu ma money lovers, they left mukuka mulenga for no reason, bt the boy is a game changer.
With Janza folks we are heading no where ! Just hope Katongo before leaving did tell him the facts ! The man to me does seem to be stagnant !
