Mpika accident claims four lives

Mpika, July 28, 2014, ZANIS… Four people have died in Mpika after the car they were travelling in hit into a stationary Benz truck.

Police have confirmed to ZANIS in Mpika that three people died on the spot while the fourth died later at Chilonga Mission hospital.

Another three accident victims are nursing serious injuries in Mpika district and Chilonga Mission hospitals.

The incident happened around 09:00 hours at continental filling station area along the Great North Road and Police say the cause of the accident was over speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Muchinga Province Deputy Police Commissioner Bonny Kapeso confirmed the death of the four to ZANIS in Mpika today.

Mr Kapeso identified the deceased as Joseph Chakalashi aged 24 and Richard Musakanya 20 both of Chitulika village of Mpika district.

The other deceased has been identified only as Mwaba whose physical address is not yet known.

Mr. Kapeso said two other accident victims are admitted to Chilonga Mission Hospital while Osward Meleki the driver is admitted to Mpika District community hospital.

He explained that the driver rammed into a ZAF Toyota corolla which was coming from Kasama road and careered –off the road landing into the stationary truck.

Mr Kapeso said the cause of the accident is due to over speeding adding that the driver was also under the influence of alcohol.

And Chilonga Mission Hospital General Superintendent Claude Sumpi confirmed having received two accident victims yesterday around 10 hours in the morning.

He said one victim died around 19:00 hours last evening and his body is lying in Chilonga Mission hospital mortuary awaiting identification by relatives while the condition of the other victim was still critical.

 Dr Sumpi added that both victims’ details are not known and appealed to anyone missing relatives to visit chilonga hospital to verify the details.

And Mpika district medical officer Dr. Nachilima Kaunda has told ZANIS in a separate interview that Osward Meleki,  25, who was driving the Toyota corolla is stabilizing while the three bodies of those who died on the spot are laying in Mpika district hospital mortuary.
