A 20-YEAR-OLD woman of Shibwela village in Namwala has been shot dead by her stepfather after a dispute over the choice of man she wanted to get married to.
Southern Province deputy commissioner of police Milner Muyambango said yesterday that Phinias Shibwela, 45, also of Shibwela village in Chief Mungaila, allegedly shot dead Neta Mulimbwa and then turned the gun on himself.
Mr Muyambango said the incident happened around 08:00 hours on Wednesday in the same village after Ms Mulimbwa insisted on a marriage his stepfather did not consent to.
“The woman’s parents were not happy with the man she wanted to get married to but she insisted that she wanted to go [into the marriage],” he said.
Mr Muyambango said an argument ensued and Mr Shibwela allegedly shot his stepdaughter dead and also shot himself.
The bodies are in the Namwala District Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem and burial.
