Women in Nakonde district have praised the Patriotic Front (PF) government for its tremendous support towards their projects in the district.
Nakonde District Women’s Associations (NDWA) chairperson Queen Nawakwi said the district has more than 400 women clubs and associations which were engaged in life training skills and income generating activities.
Ms. Nawakwi told ZANIS in an interview that since the PF government ascended to power in 2011, the District Women’s Association has received massive support towards uplifting the women through viable projects.
She stated that recently, government through the Ministry of Gender and Child Development gave the district five hammer mills and poultry equipment as part of the women empowerment scheme.
She further said government, through the Department of Community Development, Mother and Child Health, recently provided women clubs with grants and other assorted machinery which include peanut butter making and sewing machines.
She said for the first time in the history of Zambia, Nakonde has received unprecedented support from government and other corporate entities towards the self sustainability of women.
Ms. Nawakwi said through this kind of support, women have been able to conduct sensitisation meetings on child rights and dangers of early marriages.
Meanwhile Ms. Nawakwi has said women in Zambia were generally hard working despite various kinds of abuses they were faced with.
She challenged women in the country to put aside the inferiority complexes that they may have suffered over the years and take their rightful positions by participating in all development activities because they were considered as major drivers of the economy.
Ms. Nawakwi has since called on women in Nakonde and other parts of the country to stand up and defend their dignity as mothers of the nation.
She observed that women in the country were not interested in receiving special favours from men but in being appreciated and respected as partners in national development.
She has since challenged women in the area to continue working with government in fostering development for the benefit of their families and the nation at large.
