Southern  Province Provincial Education officer Martin Simtende has commended the Zambia Institute of
Mass Communication Educational Trust (ZAMCOM) for introduction an educational newspaper.

ZAMCOM  has partnered with the University of Kentucky, the Twinning  Center of the American International  health Alliance and other partners for introducing the Newspaper in Education(NIE) in Zambia.

Mr. Simtende said NIE will greatly benefit schools in Zambia by providing  expensive but relevant teaching materials and ready to use lesson plans.

He stated that pupils at all grade levels can be engaged by the hands on learning that comes from reading a newspaper.

He said this when he officially opened the Newspaper in Education workshop for teachers from Southern and central provinces organized by ZAMCOM  who are also the initiators of the programme in the Livingstone today.

Mr. Simtende noted that the work of a journalist brings about an informed citizenry that is fully engaged in the development of any given society.

“Therefore, it is the desire of my ministry to ensure that education is accessible to all Zambians. This programme will supplement government efforts in improving literacy levels among the school going
children,” he said.

He expressed hope that the newspaper will not only improve the reading culture among pupils but also supplement the shortage of learning
materials in schools.

Mr. Simtende added that it is the desire of government to ensure  that education is accessible to all Zambian and the programme will supplement government efforts in improving literacy levels among school going children.

He urged the business community to take advantage of the newspaper in Education by sponsoring it and highlighting areas of interest that would be of interest to school going children.
