Zesco United midfielder is delighted at being nominated 2013 MTN player of the year saying that 2013 was the best year of his career.
He faces competition from Ronald Kampamba of Nkana and Bronson Chama of Red Arrows.
Mtonga, 29, started his football career in 2003 at Zamtel Football Club in Ndola from where he moved to Zesco United in 2008.
“I am very happy to be nominated for player of the year. Personally I think 2013 was the best in my playing career and I am happy that people noticed,” Mtonga said, according to the official FAZ website.
“I gave my best for my club and the national team. I am the only player who featured in all games played by the Zambia national team in 2013 and that is not an easy achievement.
“ This nomination will motivate me to work even harder than I did last season and although I respect Sate Sate (Ronald Kampamba) and Bronson Chama I believe I deserve to win because of how I performed last year,” he said.
Mtonga has never been previously nominated for the league’s top award but has won Zesco United player of the year award in each year since 2010.
And Bronson Chama of Red Arrows told fazfootball.com that being nominated as one of the best three players was a humbling experience.
“I am very humbled. I thank my coaches and my teammates who made this possible. I could not have done it all by myself. The people who were selecting know why they selected me but I think Kondwani and Kampamba deserve the award. Kondwani was instrumental in his club finishing second in the league and he played a big role during the Cosafa and Cecafa competitions. Kampamba did not play much at the national team but his goals helped Nkana win the league; so it is not easy to choose between the two,” said Chama.
Chama, 27, started his career at Kitwe United in 2006 playing there only for one season before joining Kabwe Warriors where he remained until 2011. He moved to Red Arrows in 2011.
Chama was voted player on the year in his single season at Kitwe United and was also voted player of the year at Kabwe Warriors in 2008.
The third and final nominee Ronald Kampamba, 19, scored 18 goals finishing as the league’s top scorer for the second year running.
Kampamba believes that his hard work paid off resulting in being nominated for player of the year as well as winning the top scorer’s award.
“I am very happy to be nominated and I thank God for being top scorer and being nominated as player of the year. It is a challenge for me to do even better next season,” said the diminutive striker who started his career at Kitwe Academy in 2007.
Kampamba joined Nkana in 2009 when the team played Division One football.
The 2013 Zambian football annual awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 12th February at Moba Hotel in Kitwe.
