CATHERINE Phiri and Charles Manyuchi today go into camp to prepare for the World Boxing Union (WBC) title fights set for January 25 at the Government Complex in Lusaka.
The main fight will see Manyuchi, who is also the African Boxing Union (ABU) welterweight champion, take on Ghanaian Patrick Allotey for the vacant WBC welter weight title while Catherine, who is also the ABU bantamweight women champion, would be up against Nadi Hokmi of France for the vacant WBC silver bantamweight title.
Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) operations manager Chris Malunga said in an interview in Lusaka that Manyuchi who hails from Zimbabwe arrived yesterday to start preparations for next month’s fight.
And coach Mike Zulu said the boxers are focused on winning the titles because they understand what it means to win a WBC title.
Zulu said his camp was aware of Allotey’s strengths and weaknesses and that he was confident Manyuchi will beat his opponent when the two square off.
“Our aim is to get those two WBC belts that will make Zambian boxing get recognition and be ranked third in the world. Winning these titles would be a gateway to challenging for senior belts,” he said as he assured fans of good fights worth their money.
