Kenya’s Harambee Stars held in-form Ethiopia to a barren draw Wednesday evening in a Group A tie as the 2013 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup kicked off at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.
Although coach Sewnet Bishaw’s team created so many scoring chances, the Kenyan team, led by enterprising Francis Kahata, held strong.
Ethiopia had Yousuf Yassin and US-based Foad Abas miss glaring chances. Kahata and David Gateri were also wasteful for the hosts.
In a surprise move, Kenyan head coach Adel Amrouche was missing on the bench.
Sources claim he refused to appear for the game because the FA has failed to pay his outstanding dues.
James Nandwa, Kenya’s assistant coach, said his boys had played a good game, but failed to score.
“We shall keep improving in every game and we now need to win our second game because it will be important,” added Nandwa, who was in charge of the team when they came second in last year’s competition held in Uganda.
The earlier 2-1 victory for Zanzibar over South Sudan puts them top of the Group with three points, while Kenya and Ethiopia are second and South Sudan in fourth position.
