THE Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA) has implored clubs to start investing in grassroots basketball if the standards of the game were to improve.
ZBA vice-president north Andrew Nyirenda said in an interview yesterday that Zambian clubs’ poor performance during the Zone Six Inter Club Championship that was recently held in Lusaka should act as a wakeup call.
Nyirenda said the tournament saw Zambian clubs finishing sixth and seventh should be a wak eup call for the basketball fraternity to lay a firm foundation on the grassroots.
He said there was need to improve the standards of players in the country for them to compete favourably during international tournaments, adding that the ZBA had embarked on an ambitious youth programme aimed at tapping talent from schools.
And Nyirenda said the association would conduct another coaching clinic that would also include match officials set for November 22 and 29.
