Chambeshi MFEZ creates 700,000 jobs

THE Chambishi Multi-Facility Economic Zone (MFEZ) currently running 27 companies has created over 700, 000 local jobs.

MFEZ planning and investment promotions supervisor Cai Jian said it was gratifying that the MFEZ was proving to be a positive step for Zambia.

She was speaking when Ambassadors and High Commissioners from the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) accredited to Zambia toured the facility yesterday.

Ms Cai said the company had so far invested more than US$140 million and that the MFEZ was open to international and local investors.

SADC Region Chairperson for Ambassadors and High Commissioners David Bandawe said during the tour that the Zambian Government’s policy was commendable.

He applauded the Government for introducing a policy that was attractive to international and local investors.

Mr Bandawe, who is Malawian High Commissioner to Zambia, said infrastructure development going on at the MFEZ was impressive and good for Zambia.

“This infrastructure development is impressive and I believe we still need China in the development of our African communities,” he said.

Mr Bandawe said the MFEZ was creating job opportunities for the Zambian people and reducing poverty in communities

Earlier, Mr Bandawe said the SADC region intended to learn from the economic development that exists between Zambia and China.

He said this when he led a group of diplomats in paying a courtesy call on Kitwe District Commissioner Elias Kamanga at his office yesterday.
“We are here to visit the MFEZ so that we see what the Zambian and Chinese Governments are doing,” he said.

Mr Kamanga said the MFEZ was an important venture which should be encouraged within the SADC region and the continent.
