Mandela is an inspiration-Masebo
Livingstone, July 18 2013, ZANIS—– Tourism and Arts Minister Silvia Masebo says reflecting on former South African President Nelson Mandela’s life inspires her to work hard and strive for good leadership in Zambia.
Ms Masebo has challenged leaders in the country to emulate Nelson Mandela who turned 95 years today, as he is Africa’s icon of peace and has shown that there is great reward in good leadership.
She said this in Livingstone today during commemoration of the Nelson Mandela International day, held under the theme: “Take action, inspire change, make every day a Mandela Day”.
Mandela Day aims to inspire people to take action to build a global movement for good and change the world for the better.
“There could be nothing more fitting than to celebrate his birthday with a day dedicated to his life’s work and that of his charitable organizations and to ensure his legacy continues forever,” said Ms Masebo.
Ms Masebo said president Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for social justice and as such individuals, groups and corporate entities had to pledge 67 minutes of their time on July 18 and everyday to give back.
She said as a tourism sector, efforts could be channelled towards developing community tourism to alleviate poverty and promote green tourism.
Meanwhile, Ms Masebo in conjunction with Green Pop planted a Baobab tree at the Livingstone Museum in honor of president Mandela symbolizing sustainable tourism.
She called on the nation to continue praying for president Mandela and wished he was well enough to attend the 20th session of the UNWTO General Assembly to be co-hosted by Zambia and Zimbabwe next month.
And Green Pop Director for Trees, Benjamin Mibenge said the baobab tree symbolized strength and the determination by president Mandela to fight for the freedom of South Africans during the apartheid period.
