Govt. calls for promotion of Bicycle race
Chipata, July 15,2013, ZANIS — Government says the Bicycle race called Chova must be popularized not only for economic benefit but for the health of the nation.
Eastern Province Minister, Malozo Sichone, says it was for this reason that the Ministry of Youth and Sports should ensure that it popularizes the sport to other districts in the province for inclusiveness.
Sichone said government remained committed to supporting all sporting activities in the region hence the need for the ministry in conjunction with other sponsors to scale up the sport to other districts.
ZANIS sports reports that the provincial minister was speaking when he officiated at this year’s bicycle race (Choova ) held at Chipata Golf Coast in Chipata.
“I look forward to seeing such activities happening even in other districts and communities of this province and that can only happen if companies and organizers come on board to such events as we have witnessed in today’s Choova event,” Sichone stressed.
The Minister said the ministry should also consider introducing a junior bicycle race to attract school going children to participate in the sport.
Mr. Sichone stated that the Patriotic Front (PF) manifesto recognize sport as a unifying factor and a good conductor to the fight against HIV and AIDS.
“Sport especially now is considered as a reliable vehicle used to reach out to the masses in sensitizing them on the fight against HIV and AIDS and other vices in our midst that impede on our national development” he said.
And speaking at the same function one of the sponsors Road Transport Safety Agency (RTSA) Educational Officer Linda Sakala advised people in the region to have access to the High Way code.
Ms. Sakala said it was important for the people to acquire a highway code for free, to know the road rules and avoid traffic accidents.
She noted that a well informed community on the traffic rules would assist to reduce road traffic accidents which were rated number three as causes of death in the country adding that the code was not only for drivers but the masses at large.
This year’s event attracted sponsors from Lusaka and Chipata among them RTSA, NICO insurance and Exide Batteries under the theme “Road Safety is everyone’s business.”

It will be good if the government will do it soon, but if it is on paper then forget the story. The reason why I have said this; is because I am also an athletic who like the sport and i used to participate in several activities but nothing has been done.
Malanda kanwa fye.
I highly agree with GOVT that Bicycle race should be popularized not only for economic benefit but for the health of the nation. I hope that necessary promotional steps will be taken for this. Thanks
