AFRICAN Rally champion, Mohamed Essa says he is under pressure to retain the title after failing to finish the fourth stage of the competition in Tanzania.In an interview Essa said it was the first time in his career that he rolled over his car and was disappointed.
He said he was under pressure to fix the car before the next rally in Kenya where he was hoping to gain some points that would put him back on track to retain the title.
He further dismissed fears that he would not be able to take part in the remaining stages of the ARC.
“We have to take part because we still have a big chance. That was a big crash in Tanzania which we have to overcome in the next stage. The car has arrived in the country and they are currently working on it but it has to be ready by Friday so that Saturday we start off,” Essa said.
“I think I still have a big chance despite the pressure. You know champions always come from the back not in front.”
Essa described 2013 as a difficult year for him after missing the first stage of the ARC in Ivory Coast before crashing out in both the South Africa and Tanzania Rallies.
He however managed to win the third stage in Zambia where he accumulated 25 points.
Zambia’s young driver Jassy Singh is currently leading the ARC charts on 48 points followed by Jas Mangat of Uganda who has 40 while Giancarlo Davite of Rwanda is on 33 points and Essa is fourth with 25 points.
Essa commended Singh for his impressive performance so far saying it was fantastic to see another Zambian leading the rally.
