Rehabilitation works for water and sanitation facilities at Sioma High School in the newly created Sioma district in Western province have been completed at a total cost of KR 400 000.
Government recently disbursed funds for the renovation of the school’s water system and ablutions blocks that have not being operational for the past ten years.
Sioma District Commissioner Mubiana Mutomena says pupils at the school now have running water and are using good toilets, a development he said has cheered pupils in the area.
Mr Mutomena told ZANIS in a telephone interview today that the new development at the school will go a long way in encouraging pupils to attend lessons.
He explained that school children were for a long time subjected to drawing water from the river, a situation he said contributed to the school’s performance being the poorest in the country.
Mr Mutomena has since commended government for removing subsides on fuel and maize stressing that the gesture will enable government to fund more developmental projects such as the one in Sioma.
He added that as a civil servant living among the poorest people, he understands how funds saved from the removal of subsides will improve the lives of people in remote areas.
Sioma High School was reportedly closed in January this year due to poor sanitation facilities.
