Pedestrian dies in bus accident

Shiwangándu, June 14, 2013, ZANIS…A pedestrian in Shiwangándu district

in Muchinga province died on the spot last night after being hit by

a Lusaka bound bus at Kalalantekwe village along the great north road.

Both Shiwangándu district commissioner Catherine Chileshe and Muchinga

province deputy police commissioner Chilije Nyirenda have confirmed

the accident in separate interviews with the Zambia News and

Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali today.

Mr. Nyirenda said that the accident involving a Marcopolo bus

registration number ABM 967 belonging to Kapekele Motorways of Lusaka and

driven by Jonathan Simukonda of Chawama compound occurred around 21:00

hours last night.

Police say the bus was carrying 20 passengers.

Mr. Nyirenda said the pedestrian identified as Emmanuel Nsofwa aged

54, a village headman of Teleni village was hit as he was trying to

cross the road and died on the spot.

Mr. Nyirenda said that all the passengers on the bus escaped unhurt

adding that police have since impounded the bus which 6is currently

parked at Nambuluma Police Station.

He added that the driver of the bus has also been arrested and

detained in police custody at Nambuluma Police Station.

The body of the deceased is lying at Chinsali district community

hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem and burial.

In another development Police in Mafinga district of Muchinga Province

have arrested an 18 year  old juvenile for allegedly defiling a 12

year-old grade five pupil.

Muchinga Province Deputy Police Commissioner Chilije Nyirenda said

police moved in to withdraw the girl from forced marriage following a

complaint from members of the public.

Mr. Nyirenda told ZANIS in Chinsali today that the juvenile has been

charged with one count of defilement and will appear in court soon.

Mr. Nyirenda has since appealed to the traditional leaders in Mafinga

to sensitize their subjects on the need to promote education of

the girl child.

He warned that police will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute all

those in the fore front of arranging marriages involving minors.

And Society for Women Against HIV/AIDS in Zambia (SWAAZ) Coordinator

for Northern and Muchinga Provinces Maggie Siame has commended the

police for withdrawing the minor from marriage and for arresting the

juvenile for alleged defilement.

Ms. Siame said in an interview with ZANIS that her organization is

equally concerned with increased cases of early marriages and

defilements in Mafinga district.
