Katete ups GBV campaign
Katete, June 10, 2013, ZANIS…Katete district commissioner Colonel
Kaisa Kunda says government is concerned with the negative vices
perpetuated on children and women.
Col Kunda said it was for this reason that vices such as early
marriages, child abuse, and gender based violence among others were
being vigorously tackled through sensitization campaigns in Katete district.
He said this is because government attaches great Importance to issues affecting women
and children.
Mr Kunda said the negative vices perpetuated on children and women
required concerted efforts if they were to be fought.
He was speaking during the walkathon of girls brigade held at Reformed
Church of Zambia (RCZ)) in Katete over the weekend.
Mr Kunda stated that the negative vices affecting women and children
calls for partnership and solutions from organizations such as the
girls brigade in curbing the inhuman practices.
The DC said in a world threatened by forces such as moral decay of gays
and lesbians, girls could only be protected with prayer.
“There is nothing more appreciated than enriching the lives of the
young people with the word of God to allow them grow in wisdom and
fellowship with God,” he said.
He however commended the Girls Brigade for taking initiatives to
sensitize girls and woman to highlight issues affecting them.
And speaking at the same function Katete girls Bridget Commissioner
Lydia Sambo commended government for promoting the vision of the
brigade by creating a conducive environment for the girls to
participate in nation development.
Ms Sambo stated that the brigade in the district was working to
address issues that infringe on the freedom of girls and women through
legal systems of government.
She further said the brigade was also committed to supporting the
programs of the government that fully uplifted the welfare of the
girls and women.
Speaking earlier Reverend Elijah Mwandila said plans were underway to
have a skills training center which shall be a tool to empower the
girls who have dropped out of school and have no access to tertiary
education .
Reverend Mwandila stated that this would enable the girls live a
sustainable life and contribute effectively to national development.
He has since called on well-wishers to assist them to raise funds to
put up a skills training centre.
