Minister of Information Dora Siliya says the media has the right to hold government accountable in a manner that does not make those in authority to question their agenda.

Ms Siliya, who is chief Government spokesperson, was speaking in Kitwe today during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day under the theme ‘Keeping power in check, justice and the rule of law.’

Meanwhile, Ms Siliya say cyber laws are not meant to limit the media.

She said the laws are meant to protect citizenry against mistreatment.

The minister also called on the media to quickly implement the self-regulatory body to promote professionalism and responsibility.

And Ms Siliya has challenged public media managers to design lucrative business models.

She urged ZNBC to improve content in view of the revised TV Levy.

The minister also assured the Zambia Daily Mail and Times of Zambia that government will find an answer to the challenges the two institutions are facing.

And speaking earlier, World Press Freedom Day local organising committee chairman Enock Ngoma bemoaned the poor conditions of service and harassment of journalists.

Meanwhile, Northern Media regional club Secretary Clinton Masumba urged government to provide necessary conditions of service for the Media.

At the same function, Press Association of Zambia President Andrew Sakala appealed to government not to use cyber laws to choke the media
