CECILIA ZULU reports:
THE Lusaka Golf Club welcomes hundreds of local and foreign women golfers who will jostle for honours in the East and Central All-Africa Golf Challenge Trophy that tees off today.
It is the first time Zambia is hosting this prestigious tournament expected to be highly competitive.
With Tanzania winning the title in two consecutive years – 2011 and 2012 – the defending champions are favourites, but are unlikely to have it easy.
At last years tournament in Botswana, Zambia finished second to Tanzania but the hosts are obviously determined to grab the trophy on home soil.
The Zambian golfers to be led by Hilda Edwards have an advantage over the visitors in that they know the course at the Lusaka Golf Club better.
But the hosts, who have been paired with Tanzanians in first draw, will have to be at their very best to dislodge the experienced East Africans.
Zambias team also has United States of America-based Melissa Nawa, her sister Tina and Davenshi Naik.
Edwards will be the first Zambian to step on the golf course with Tanzanias Madina Iddi and Elizabeth Armitage of Kenya while Naik will join the race eight minutes after Edwards tees off.
She will play against Hawa Wanyeche of Tanzania and Agnes Nyakio of Kenya.
Melissa has been partnered with Tanzanias Angel Eaton and Sheila Chinkhandwe of Malawi while her young sister Tina will play alongside Neema Olomi of Tanzania and Maina Mkandawire of Malawi.
The draws are fine. I am okay with them [the draws] and I feel no pressure. I am confident we will win the championship, especially that we will also be enjoying home ground advantage, Melisa, who suffered an ankle injury three days ago, said in an interview yesterday.
And Zambia Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) president Moono Mwila said all is set for the three-day event, which will be followed by the Zambia Ladies Open Golf Championship from Friday to Sunday.
Mwila is also the manager for team Zambia.
The East and Central, which will also be live on Super Sport, will end on Tuesday.
