Research is engine for development – Simukanga

University of Zambia Vice Chancellor Stephen Simukanga says research is an important control engine for the development of the country.

Professor Simukanga says it is important that the nation is kept abreast with the new developments through research.

Prof. Simukanga says it is for this reason that lecturers at UNZA have risen to the occasion and provided advanced knowledge.

Prof. Simukanga was speaking in Lusaka today during the first ever Research and Science Media press briefing held at UNZA.

He also unveiled a five strategic plan for 2013 to 2017 which seeks to promote excellence in teaching, research and community service.

ZANIS reports that some of the new research works were carried out on wheat and beans varieties and studies will benefit the nation thereby exposing the lead researchers.

“UNZA has not been dormant but has continued to conduct some research and today, the media has been called to sample some of the research outcomes,” Prof. Simukanga said.

He directed the Heads of Departments at the institution to encourage faculty and students to carry out research in areas of basic science to meet the developmental needs of the country, the region and the entire African continent.

He challenged the researchers to show case to the media their ability and professional skills which UNZA is proud of.

And speaking earlier Directorate of Research and Graduate Studies Director Imasiku Nyambe said the directorate is exploring ways of identifying key organisations and corporate entities as well as government line ministries to undertake some discoveries and innovations with a view to commercialising them.

Prof. Nyambe commended the researchers for their remarkable initiatives in science.
