Chongwe Patriotic Front (PF) Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo has called for an end to cultural practices that promote malnutrition at household level.
Speaking when she graced this year’s “Global Day of Action” against malnutrition in Chongwe today, Ms. Masebo said it was saddening that some wives prepare sumptuous meals for their husbands and not the children.
She explained that the trend was more common among the Soli speaking people of Chongwe district.
Ms. Masebo said more often, the children are served poor meals as compared to what is given to their fathers.
She has since implored women to reform and start paying attention to the nutritional needs of their children by preparing healthy meals for them.
Ms. Masebo said the fight against malnutrition needs concerted efforts if the high levels of undernourishment are to be reversed in the country.
Meanwhile, Ms. Masebo has thanked President Micheal Sata for the developmental projects taking place in her constituency.
She told the gathering that President Sata was fulfilling the promises he made to the people of Chongwe during campaigns.
Ms. Masebo revealed that government has released funds meant for the construction of Chalimbana road.
She noted that once the road is completed, farmers will be able to transport their produce to the market timely.
And speaking earlier at the same function, Zambia Civil Society Scaling up Nutrition National Coordinator, William Chilufya stated that observing the “Global Day of Action” against malnutrition was cardinal as it empowers families with information on nutrition.
Mr. Chilufya however appealed to government ministries dealing with the plight of children to join hands with the private sector and civil society in scaling up the fight against malnutrition.
