Lusaka Mayor Daniel Chisenga has called on the businesses operating in Lusaka to come on board and help in making and keeping Zambia clean.
Mr. Chisenga said the garbage that is piling up in the country was sometimes as a result of the same businesses dumping refuse in undesignated areas.
He said it would make the job of the council easier if the business houses found ways of helping in the cleaning up of the waste they create.
He was speaking in Lusaka today when he received 500 bins that were donated by Safintra world class roofing and steel Zambia.
Mr. Chisenga also hoped the companies that were supposed to collect trash would not let the bins overrun with garbage saying this would defeat the whole purpose of placing bins in order to reduce litter.
And country director for Safintra Zambia Sandeep Kaushik said his company decided to donate the bins to the council so as to help in cleaning up Zambia.
Mr. Kaushik said the bins were made from material that is left over after the company makes roofing sheets.
He said there is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that makes bins from the left over materials.
The proceedings from the sale of bins go back to the NGO to help with its operations.
He also said his company will remain committed to helping keep Zambia clean and pledged that Safintra would be donating bins to the council annually.
