Electrification of chiefs palaces progresses
Solwezi, February 28, 2014, ZANIS….. The government has embarked on an
exercise to connect all chiefs’ palaces in Solwezi district to
hydroelectric power .
The government project is part of effort to accelerate the rural
electrification programme.
In an interview with ZANIS, Solwezi District Commissioner (DC),
Crispin Likando revealed that palaces for chiefs Kapijimpanga and Mumena were
already connected to hydroelectric power.
Mr Likando however stated that the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation
(ZESCO) was doing final touches like wiring and mounting of polls to
Senior Chief Mujimanzovu’s palace adding that at chief Mulonga’s
palace works were expected to be completed soon.
Mr. Likando said that government in conjunction with ZESCO had started
lighting peri-urban areas such as Kimale, Kimiteto, Zang’amenu and
weigh bridge areas.
He furthermore revealed that government was taking electricity to
Mushindamo border area that will also capture chiefs’ Chikola and
Musaka while surrounding schools and rural health centers will also
benefit from the project.
Mr. Likando said in order to fulfill the vision of lighting the
entire province, the government will tap power from Mumbwa to connect
to Kalumbila mine and surrounding areas.
The other connection will be from Lumwana to Kalumbila, and the same
power will be used to supply Lumwana market, the district hospital and schools while
Copperbelt energy will also boost the supply to Kalumbila.
