Government has created more than 1,039 employment opportunities for youths countrywide and further embarked on the construction of Youth Resource Centres in selected parts of the country in order to empower young people.
And a total of K23, 188, 869 has been disbursed to various youth groups countrywide under the youth development fund which is being facilitated by the Ministry of Youth and Sport in order to support the growth of a sustainable youth led small scale enterprises into the private sector.
President Michael Sata has disclosed in his latest facebook posting that his government has been disbursing loans and grants under the youth development fund (YDF) which he said is aimed at supporting the growth of sustainable youth led SMEs into the private sector for wealth and employment creation.
"You may wish to know that since 2012, our government has disbursed a total of K23, 188, 869.9 which has created more than 1,039 employment opportunities for our entrepreneur youths,” he said.
Mr. Sata further said government, in partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the New Economic Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), is implementing the decent jobs for youth and improved food security through development of sustainable livelihoods in rural areas.
He said this programme is expected to create 3,000 new jobs among young women and men over a period of 48 months and will have a budget of US$6.9 million.
President Sata stressed that the new programme in which government has partnered with ILO, FAO and NEPAD also seeks to improve the financial performance of at least 5,000 youth owned-managed rural enterprises as well as boost food security for the local population by way of increasing the volume of production of soya beans.
Meanwhile, the head of state has revealed that works on the construction of youth resource centres in Chongwe, Chililabombwe, Kalabo and Kwilimuna have advanced while at Kafue youth resources centre, the project is at the stage of awarding tender.
President Sata stated that Chiyota youth resource centre in Chongwe was being developed at a cost of K12 million and that 99 percent of works have so far been done whereas Chililabombwe youth resource centre in the Copperbelt province is being developed at a cost of K10.5 million with 80 percent of works having been done.
Mr. Sata revealed that his government was also constructing Kwilimuna youth resource centre at a cost of K11.6 million and Kalabo youth resource centre at a cost of K23.9 million.
Kafue youth resource centre, which is still at the stage of awarding tender to contractors, will gobble K29.6 million.
During the official opening of the 3rd session of the 11th National Assembly, President Sata announced government’s plans to construct youth vocational training centres across the country meant to empower youths with skills.
