ZESCO women to hand-over shelter
Chikankata, Feb 24, 2014, ZANIS……………The ZESCO Women’s Group has completed the construction of a Mother’s shelter at Kafue Gorge Community Hospital.
Kafue Gorge ZESCO Women’s Group acting Chairperson Grace Kampamba who confirmed the development to ZANIS in Chikankata said the shelter is about to be handed-over.
She said the Mother’s shelter is being built by the ZESCO women in conjunction with the utility company.
Mrs. Kampamba said the women mobilized themselves and came up with the idea of how they were going to help the community.
She explained that after realizing how much people were suffering by sleeping in corridors as they waited on the patients, ZESCO in partnership with ZESCO women group of Chikankata district embarked on the construction of the Mothers shelter as this will go a long way in helping the community.
“Kafue Gorge Community Hospital services over 5000 people and most of them are coming from far-away places. Whenever a patient was admitted at the Hospital, the people waiting on the patients greatly suffered because they had nowhere to sleep or cook from,” she said.
She said the Women came up with fundraising ventures, solicited for funds from organisations as well as received donations from well-wishers in order to finance the project.
She further explained that the shelter is in its final stages and will be opened for use by the people in Chikankata district.
She said once opened, the shelter will provide the local community with a place to sleep, bath and cook from as they wait on their relatives to be discharged.
And Hospital Administrator Nelson Sichali explained that the hospital was fortunate to receive such a donation.
He said that the Hospital itself has played no role in financing the project apart from supporting the women’s idea and plans as long as it was for the benefit of the entire community.
In a separate interview with a mother from Cheeba in Chikankata District, Matilda Cheelo explained with happiness that the mother’s shelter is a source of joy and happiness for everyone in the district.
