THE Non-Governmental Organisations Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has welcomed the conviction of renowned Zambian musician Clifford Dimba, popularly known by the stage name General Kanene, for the offence of having carnal knowledge of a minor.
NGOCC executive director Engwase Mwale said in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday that she is deeply concerned at the ever-increasing sexual cases against women and girls.
Ms Mwale said it is totally unacceptable and barbaric for men to continue abusing innocent and sometimes vulnerable young girls.
She said studies have shown that the effect of sexual abuse of young girls is intense, not only to the victim but to society as a whole.
“We hope that the conviction and subsequent sentencing of General Kanene will serve as a deterrent to other would-be criminals who indulge in evil acts such as defilement.
“We would like to take this opportunity to appeal to our courts to re-look at the punishment for these sexual offences, as the current ones do not seem to be acting as a deterrent enough given the increased cases,” Ms Mwale said.
She said the NGOCC will not rest until all criminals that sexually abuse women and girls are brought to book.
And Zambia Daily Mail Facebook reactions on the General Kanene saga are unanimously supporting the punishment and many readers are hoping the singer will get the punishment he deserves for defiling an under-16 child just because she wanted to be a ‘dancing’ queen’.
