The Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) has temporary closed down the water plant in Chongwe.

Speaking in a telephone interview with ZANIS in Lusaka on Jan 31st, LWSC Public Relation Manager, Topsy Sikainda disclosed that the water in Chongwe is not fit for human consumption and hence the temporary closure of the water plant.

Mr Sikainda said the water table in Chongwe district is 60% contaminated, resulting in the water colour to be brownish.

Mr Sikainda explained that the pump could only work if water levels in the river were at least one meter deep unlike the current situation where the water level is too low to enable the pump to provide the adequate clean water.

He said LWSC is working closely with DMMU, in transporting water from Lusaka to Chongwe to supply the residents with clean water and also urged the residents to remain calm as the matter is been worked on.
