Government has called for peaceful campaigns in the run-up to the Katuba constituency parliamentary by-election slated for 25th February this year.

In a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today, Chief Government Spokesperson Mwansa Kapeya called on political parties that are contesting the Katuba by-election to engage in mature and issue based campaigns.

Mr. Kapeya said peaceful campaigns will provide an opportunity for electorates in the constituency to exercise their democratic right of choosing a Member of Parliament (MP) of their choice.

He said it was necessary that the Katuba election be held in a peaceful atmosphere because the late area Member of Parliament Patrick Chikusu was a dignified and selfless man.

He added that it was only proper that the process of electing his replacement be equally dignified and orderly.

Mr. Kapeya, who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, further said the high number of political parties contesting the Katuba by-election was testimony of Zambia’s flourishing democracy under the Patriotic Front (PF) government.

Seven candidates are contesting the Katuba seat which fell vacant after the death of Dr. Chikusu of the MMD last month.
