MTN ZAMBIA chief marketing officer Clement Asante has described the recently held MTN Music Scorer as a success stating that Zambia has massive potential to compete at international level.
Mr Asante has further pledged that his company will continue to support the development of arts in Zambia as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
In a statement issued in Lusaka last week, Mr Asante said the handover ceremony and the public unveiling of Zambia’s newest singing sensation will be done on February 12, 2014 in Kitwe.
The music talent search programme dubbed MTN Music Scorer contest reached its grand finale with upcoming artiste Natasha Mulenga winning Season 1 of the TV reality show on Muvi TV.
Natasha won a K50,000.00 (Fifty Thousand kwacha) recording deal, K7,000.00 cash, iPhone 5 and K500 airtime for her outstanding performance in the musical contest.
Mr Asante disclosed that MTN has been working in the background to put things in place and ensure that logistics were in place before the handover ceremony.
“The Music Scorer contest started in 2013 and came to an end on January 5, 2014. Since then, we have been working in the background to ensure that all logistics are in place. We are currently making final touches on the recording contract with the studio Natasha will sign up with for her debut album,” said Mr Asante.
He described the contest as the first of its kind in that format and that it was a music talent search for aspiring musicians who ordinarily would not have the means to showcase their singing prowess.
And winner Natasha described the contest as life changing. The 22- year-old Ndola-based musician said winning the contest will catapult her into stardom.
“Zambian music has grown over time and I hope I can contribute to the positive development. My focus is Gospel music for now,” said Natasha who is inspired by another award winning local sensation Judy-O of the Supernatural woman fame.
Over 5,000 people took part in the MTN Music Scorer. The runners up were Mirriam Kemba Nkone (1st runner up) and Cindy Banda (2nd runner up) who respectively walked away with K5,000 cash, mobile phone valued at K3,000 and K350 worth of air time and K3,500 cash, mobile phone valued at K3,000 and K200 worth of airtime.
To participate, MTN customers were required to submit karaoke versions of songs of their choice via mobile phone.
The songs were then subjected to voting by the public on MTN sponsored radio shows across the country with the top 8 performers winning a ticket to the grand finale which was broadcast on Muvi TV.
The winner was determined by combined votes from viewers and in studio judges comprising TK Simuyandi (Roma Side Studios) KB (K-Army Studios) and veteran songbird Maureen Lilanda.
