Mongu commemorations of World Anti Drug Day
Mongu, June 27, ZANIS……..The Drug Enforcement Commission in Western Province has arrested about 118 people and seized about 1, 519 kilograms of cannabis since January this year.
And Western Province Permanent Secretary Emmanuel Mwamba says government is committed to fighting the drug scourge and money laundering.
Mr. Mwamba said this in a speech read on his behalf by Western Province Acting Assistant Secretary Richard Mulwanda at Nalwei Basic School during the commemoration of World Anti Drug Day in Mongu Yesterday.
He commended the Commission in the Province for its intensifing operations to reduce the supply of drugs in the communities.
Mr. Mwamba said Western Province like any other Province in the country is faced with the problem of cannabis cultivation, trafficking and abuse, saying the scourge has become a criminal menace that works to undermine the right to sustainable economic development and democratic principles of good governance.
At the same function, Western Province Drug Enforcement Commission Regional Commander Daiman Zulu noted that most of those involved in drug abuse and trafficking are young people who are supposed to contribute positively to the economic growth of the country.
Mr. Zulu said the Commission through the National Education campaign division has been conducting awareness programmes in the Province in various schools, communities, villages, churches and work places.
He stated that about 1, 510 people have been talked to so far to refrain from their acts, adding that 7 more people with drug and alcohol related issues have been attended to since January this year.
Mr. Zulu has since appealed to people in the Province to support the efforts of the Patriotic Front government through the Drug Enforcement Commission in fighting the drug scourge.
This year’s Anti Drug Day was commemorated under the theme ‘Make health your new high in life, not drugs.’’
