Chipata residents welcome road works
Chipata, June 13, 2013, ZANIS… Kapata residents are happy that government has
commenced the programme of tarring township roads in Chimwemwe
compound.
The contract to tar the township roads was awarded to Sable construction company.
Mr John Phiri, 79, of Kapata said the gesture by government to tar
township roads would go a long way in improving people’s lives as a
good road network was key to national development.
He stated that the last time he saw serious maintenance of township
roads was in the Kaunda era when there were continuous efforts to maintain
roads.
Another resident Moses Manda called on the council to seriously
monitor the road works if the contractor was to do a commendable
job.
Mr Manda said the drainage system should also be properly done to improve on
the life span of the roads which were mostly destroyed during
the rain season.
He wondered why it was difficult for constructors to also work on
drainages which were key to the life span of the road adding that the
terrain in Chipata was not difficult because the water had its own
course.
Mr Manda stated that during MMD reign, some roads were worked on but
lacked drainage systems which caused them to washed away within a
short period of time.
Recently, Chipata Town Clerk Ekan Chingangu said the council had
already given a contract to Sable Construction Company to work on
several township roads with a view to decongest the highway.
Mr Chingagngu said Lumumba road will be tarred to bring to acceptable standards as it was one
of the major roads linking the town centre to most parts of Chipata.
A check by ZANIS in Chiptata on the road works today found the contractor clearing the
roads in Chimwemwe compound.
