Government has expressed concern over the increasing cases of people dying from crocodile attacks in Chilubi district in the northern province.

Secretary to the Cabinet Dr. Roland Msiska has since asked the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to urgently intensify patrols and crop the reptiles terrorizing people on Chilubi Island.

Dr. Msiska said this in Chilubi yesterday when he paid a courtesy call on district commissioner Boniface Kamanda at his office .

Dr Msiska was accompanied by northern province permanent Secretary Hlobotha Nkunika and some governmental officials.

He observed that human life is precious must be preserved at all costs adding that Chilubi residents should be protected from the crocodile attacks while carrying out fishing expeditions on Lake Bangweulu.

Dr. Msiska said he will make a follow up with the ZAWA Head Office in Lusaka on the possibility of the Authority establishing a permanent office in Chilubi district to deal promptly to reports of crocodile attacks in the area.

And the Chilubi district commissioner Boniface Kamanda informed the Secretary to the Cabinet that people living along the shores of Lake Bangweulu in Chilubi were living in fear due to rampant cases of crocodile attacks.

Mr. Kamanda said it was unfortunate that a recent operation by ZAWA officers to crop the crocodiles in one of the affected areas on Chilubi Island failed to yielded positive results.

He appealed to Government to consider deploying permanent staff from ZAWA to manage wildlife activities in Chilubi district.

Recently, a middle-aged man was killed by a crocodile on Chilubi Island prompting an angry mob to dump his lower part of the body at Chilubi police station in protest over the increasing attacks on humans by the reptiles..
