—-Senior Chief Kalilele of the Lamba speaking people of Solwezi district has implored Government to devise strategies that will ensure that chiefdoms benefit from investments in their areas.
Senior Chief Kalilele complained that his chiefdom has not benefited from mines that are operating in Solwezi district.
The Senior Chief said only a few chiefdoms have benefited from the operations of mining companies like Lumwana, Kansanshi and Kalubila mines in terms of contracts.
The traditional leader said this when Gender and Child Development Deputy Minister, Josephine Limata, paid a courtesy call on him at his palace yesterday.
And the traditional leader has requested President Michael Sata to officiate at one of the annual traditional ceremonies that will be held in Solwezi East constituency this year.
He said traditional leaders in the area want to be visited by the President or any other top government official.
The traditional leader also appealed to President Sata to appoint a Cabinet Minister from within the province, saying Lambas feel aggrieved that they have no representation at Cabinet ministerial level.
He said it is surprising that no North-Westerner has been appointed to a cabinet ministerial position and wondered whether it was because the people of North-Western Province were not capable to hold such a port folio.
Senior Chief Kalilele also stated that Lambas will not accept a person from other regions to be fielded as a candidate during the forthcoming Solwezi East Constituency by-elections, saying people want their own.
The traditional leader also implored President Sata to create more districts in North Western Province, saying it is surprising that of all the many districts the President has created only one district has been created in North-western province.
And Gender and Child Development Deputy Minister, Josephine Limata, assured the traditional leadership in North Western Province that all their concerns will be dealt with.
Mrs Limata said President Michael Sata respects chiefs and will, therefore, not ignore concerns that they have raised.
She said it is the policy of the Patriotic Front (PF) Government to ensure chiefs are accorded the respect they deserve by ensuring that they live dignified lives.
The Deputy Minister is in North-Western Province to hand over cheques to women clubs that applied for women empowerment programmes and also to get chiefs’ attention on the vice of early marriages in chiefdoms across the country.
