Government has paid glowing tribute to the Zambezi River Authority for demonstrating high caliber corporate responsibility through assisting vulnerable female pupils at Lusitu Secondary School in Chirundu.

Chirundu District Commissioner (DC) Maxwell Shamalimba said the assistance was highly appreciated especially that it was aimed at easing the lives of vulnerable girls.

He said the girls were in dire need of education hence assistance from companies such as Zambezi River Authority was always appreciated.

He was speaking yesterday when Zambia River Authority donated 50 beds, mattresses and toiletries for use by 48 vulnerable girls who are pupils at Lusitu Secondary School in Chirundu district of Lusaka province.

The 48 girls had resorted to renting accommodation near the school while the institution was making ways of accommodating them due to their vulnerability.

The donation was party of the 2013 international women day’s celebrations which was held about three weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Zambezi River Authority Public Relations and Communications Manager Elizabeth Karonga said the donation was part of the 19 projects valued at US$1 million that her company has embarked on under the Zambezi Valley Development Fund in Siavonga and Chirundu districts.

Ms. Karonga named some of the projects as sinking of boreholes, livestock production, refurbishment of schools and equipping school laboratories.

Lusitu Secondary School, which does not run as a boarding school, has a total of 500 enrolled pupils from grade 10 to 12 with only one hostel accommodating 48 girls out of the 156 girls enrolled as boarders.
