Chisense carrying truck impounded, contraband seized
Nchelenge, February 25, ZANIS ——– The Department of Fisheries (DOF) in Nchelenge district has seized 30 bags of Chisense each weighing about 90 kilograms from a Truck contracted by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to ferry maize from satellite depots in the area.
The Volvo Truck, Registration Number ALG 9593 belonging to Diaz Freight Investment Limited of Lusaka which was carrying the fish has also been impounded by police.
Nchelenge district Fisheries Technicians Wellington Simuchile and Africa Muzungaire confirmed to ZANIS saying the truck was intercepted last Wednesday around 17:00 hours in Kefulwa area located about 47 kilometres from Nchelenge BOMA.
Mr Simuchile said the police managed to intercept the truck following a tip-off from alert members of the public who spotted it being loaded with the bags of Chisense at Mununga.
He said the driver of the truck Chimpampa Mpundu, who is in his late 30s, a resident of Garden House area in Lusaka has since fled.
Mr Simuchile said the nephew to the owner of the truck identified as James Banda, aged 28 of Garden House in Lusaka has been picked up to help police with investigations into the matter.
And Speaking to ZANIS in an interview, Banda said he was not aware that the truck had also picked up bags of Chisense because he was not present when it was loading Maize at Munkombwe Satellite Depot.
He claimed to have been sick and that he was seeking medical treatment at the time.
When asked how he accessed the keys to the truck when the driver is reported to have bolted, Banda said the keys were brought to the truck by unknown persons.
