POLICE in Solwezi have arrested three people for allegedly shooting dead Zambezi Central ward councillor Yona Mbalakanyi last month.
Suspected members of a notorious gang of gunmen called karavinas on July 17 shot dead Mr Mbalakanyi, 73.

North-Western Province deputy commissioner of police Frank Mumbuna confirmed this in an interview in Solwezi yesterday.
“We have recovered an AK 47 rifle that was hidden on the banks of Zambezi River, which we suspect was used in Mr Mbalakanyi’s murder,” Mr Mumbuna said.
He, however, withheld the names of the suspects for fear of jeopardising investigations.

Meanwhile, 15 people are nursing serious injuries after the vehicle in which they were travelling overturned on the Solwezi-Mutanda road.
Mr Mumbuna said the accident, which happened on Monday at around 18:30 hours, involved a Toyota Hiace minibus which was being driven by James Shiku of Kyawama township in Solwezi.
“The driver ran away after the accident and fortunately no life was lost,” he said.
Mr Mumbuna said the injured are admitted to Solwezi General Hospital.
