ABOUT 11 senior managers at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) in Chingola have been dropped, highly-placed sources have disclosed.
The sources said KCM fired the managers in a bid to ‘reduce the labour force’ and that the matter had created uncertainty among the remaining Zambian senior members of staff.
Those affected include senior manager upper ore body project Modileen Mulilo,
commercial controller Grayson Kayamba, Human resource manager Susan Ziko, and head of insurance Jaquiline Katoto.
All the affected were Zambian workers on full time and pensionable employment.
None of the expatriate workers have been affected.
The termination of employment letters dated February 21, this year were signed by vice-president human capital, David Kaunda,
Management has not given reasons for terminating the senior managers’ employment services.
“Management regrets to inform you that your employment has been terminated with immediate effect,” a letter addressed to one of the affected managers read in part.
KCM public relations manager Joy Sata was not available for a comment by Press time as her phones went unanswered.
But Chingola District Commissioner George Sichula confirmed receiving a report about the termination of employment for some senior staff at KCM.
Mr Sichula said it was unfortunate that KCM management had decided to
terminate the workers’ employment and further asked some contractors to reduce on their labour.
He said KCM had taken such a drastic decision without engaging Government.
“KCM, without engaging Government, has decided to fire some people and they seem not to
consider the feelings of the affected people,” he said.
Mr Sichula said he was trying the whole day to get in touch with KCM management over the matter but that officials were reported to be in a meeting.
