SIX Fishermen have drowned while four others survived after two boats they were travelling in capsized in bad weather on Lake Bangweulu in Samfya.
The boats capsized after midnight last Monday but the matter was only reported to the police on Friday afternoon by headman Malombola of Chief Kasoma Bangweulu’s chiefdom.
Luapula Province deputy commissioner of police Webby Shula, who confirmed the incident in an interview yesterday, said the bodies of the deceased have been recovered and buried.
Mr Shula said each boat had five fishermen and that four died from the first boat and two from the second one.
“The two boats capsized around the same time due to bad weather as it was raining heavily on that particular day,” he said.
The victims of the first boat are Evans Bwalya, 36, Mwape Chisela, 55, both of Malombola village, Patrick Muyembe, 55, of Katakwa village and Ephraim Chisela, 36, of Tito village.
The sole survivor on this boat was Maxson Ng’andu, whose other details are not known.
The second boat had fishermen of Kabonde village. The dead are Alarm Mwansa, 69, and another man who has not yet been identified.
Sylvester Mwansa and Maxwell Chisela survived the mishap along with a third man, whose particulars are not known as he is in a state of shock.
“I appeal to fishermen to ensure that they are extra careful as they go fishing during this season,” Mr Shula said.
He said fishermen should fish near the shore to enable them to swim to safety in case of such accidents.
