ZAMBIA emerged third at the Confederation of Southern Sports Association of Southern Africa athletics championships held in Zimbabwe after winning a total of 27 medals.
Zambia Schools Sports Association general secretary Nawa Nyambe confirmed the results and praised the pupils’ performance.
Nyambe said Zambia was improving on its medal haul every year which was a good sign for the development of athletics in schools.
“In 2011 we won 20 medals, in 2012 we managed 22 medals and this year we have won 27 medals. You can see that we are improving every year. We hope this will continue and I can say the Zambians put up a good performance,” Nyambe said.
From the 27 medals Zambia won six gold, 13 silver and eight bronze.
Hosts Zimbabwe emerged first with 61 medals followed by Namibia with 38 medals and Zambia of third.
Nyambe said the gold that Zambia won came from races in 400, 800, 1000, 1500, 3000 metres and high jump.
Zambia went with a total of 48 athletes.
